We had been warned, at the race briefing those many kms back in Mopani camp, and the night before that we would be encountering a bit of sand towards the end of day 2, possibly 13kms thereof. The top cyclists rose to the challenge (apparently most of them anyway) and spun their way through the soft sand. Us beginners did not have the stamina nor technique, and ended up pushing our way past the 'encouraging' signs that at least indicated that someone had fairly recently been on the same track...
